Ruby Curious [day 1]

In this course we’ll introduce you to the wonderfully curious world of Ruby. You’ve heard the hype and can no longer hold back you brain’s intrinsic thirst for knowledge. Will it make you toast in the morning? Is it your best friend? Can it really solve world hunger?

We think so and we’ll show you how. In this course we’ll demonstrate the pure awesomeness of Ruby by exploring:

  • Ruby’s history and background
  • Strings, Integers and Objects
  • Arrays, Hashes, and Collections
  • Control structures
  • Methods and Classes
  • Modules and Mixins

And more if time allows.

Rails Initiate [day 2+3]

This course is designed to introduce you to the basics of Ruby on Rails. We’ll cover:

  • The Model, View, Controller architecture
  • Managing your database with migrations
  • Convention over Configurations and DRY
  • Basic ActiveRecord associations
  • Interacting with your application via console
  • Helpers, partials, and layouts
  • Controllers and filters
  • RESTful concepts
  • Deployment with Heroku
  • Libraries and RubyGems

And more as time allows.

At the Intridea Office, Washington, D.C.

This class will be held at our offices in Washington D.C. We're located right near the Dupont Circle Metro stop (Red Line) which means you have easy access from Reagan National Airport (airport code DCA). There's no need to rent a car, just stay in a hotel near any metro stop and you'll have no trouble finding us or getting around!

Instructors

Jeremy McAnally | Intridea, Inc.

Jeremy McAnally has been a Ruby and Rails developer for almost 6 years, currently at Intridea. In that time, he's worked on a lot of successful products with some of the top minds in the Ruby community. Jeremy is the author of Ruby in Practice and Mr. Neighborly's Humble Little Ruby Book. He's contributed a ton of documentation and code to Rails (including application templates), and more recently, he created the Rails Core Team sanctioned Rails 3 upgrade tool, rails_upgrade.

Adam Bair | Intridea, Inc.

Adam has a passion for elegant solutions and beautiful code even in the depths of the trenches. He is a Ruby on Rails evangelist who advocates behavior driven development and web standards. He's a regular instructor at the LoneStar Ruby Conference, talked at the first annual South Carolina Ruby Conference, and participated in the 2008 and 2008 Rails Rumble competitions. Before joining Intridea, Adam worked at Revolution Health building large-scale applications used by millions of people each month. Before that, he managed humans in a network operating center, punched down network cables in dark server closets, and even worked with PHP.
